For today.

In lighter snow and winter weather what are your thoughts on Studded versus Studless tires?

Also does anyone have any experience with General Altimax Arctic tires?

For what it's worth, I ran Continetal ExtremeWinterContacts (studless) for the first time this winter(Upstate NY, traveling 4 hours each way at night every two weeks with no chance to stop for storms) and had favorable impressions of them. Rarely got squirelly even into 2"+ of fresh snow and I was never at a loss for grip. From what I've heard studded is better for slow/short distance applications over heavy ice(ie a snowplow driver getting up a steep driveway).

I've heard that for a cheap tire, those Generals are okay. Just don't overdrive them.

Although, I was searching for winter tires a week or two ago on tirerack and found that WS70s were the cheapest option, on sale. I hear those are like the best...

I have been interested in Continental tires, both winter and DWS, but they don't seem to make anything for 14 inch wheels.

My problem is I want maximum traction and a lot of reviews seem to be favoring other things like wear and comfort and I don't really care. I just don't want to spin off ever again. I've been driving in winter for almost a decade now and I never spun or lost it entirely until this last winter.

I spun off a highway last November in my Mazda 3 on Uniroyal Tiger Paws. I was driving along fine and had been on the road for 30 miles already and just suddenly going around a slightly banked turn on a highway around 40 mph the car just lost it. Luckily I just went into a ditch and not into traffic.

In March I was driving my Miata with Dunlop Direzzas and I was going about 30 mph in a straight line with no change and it completely spun around on me and next thing I know I'm facing the traffic I was just driving with and I was freaking out. I know I shouldn't have been driving on summer tires but it was a very light snow near the end of winter and I hadn't gone far from home.

Summer tires in snow is like attaching bars of soap to your feet.

Yeah, it was awful. The only reason I attempted it is in the cold weather on dry pavement they worked fine.

You don't need studded tires. I've lived in some of the snowiest parts of Canada, and some of the iciest. Unless you live in a rural setting and your street is rarely cleared, you won't need them. They don't last as long either, and they're bad for the road.

Go with studless tires. Studded tires only help on ice and can be worse in snow and on dry roads. I run studless tires on my STI and have never had an issue living in an area that averages well over 200" annually. We have had close to 300" the last two winters and I've had no problems getting around with studless tires.

I have no experience with the General Altimax so I won't comment on those. A lot of people in this area used to swear by the Power King snow tires for cheap winter tires. Now the Firestone Winterforce tires are very popular and have good reviews as well as being relatively cheap.

Pretty much all winter tires are worlds better than any all season. I have two customers who used those Generals and they were fine.

Studs = unnecessary unless you live in northern mountains.

I switched from my winter to summer tires 1 week too early this year - it snowed 4 days after I switched... and it was nasty icy stuff too. I went home very very slowly that day. Bars of soap is an excellent analogy.
